The Brass Gate Valve is ubiquitous. It has been used widely since its invention in the mid-1800s. Controlling the rate of steam was the main reason for its invention, for the valves of the 1800s were not strong enough to do what the industrialists needed. As time advanced, the gate valve was designed to handle gases other than steam. It can also be used for smaller capacities, such as hoses. Taking apart a gate valve may be necessary when it no longer functions as it should.
Locate and turn off the main water supply before disassembling the gate Stop Valve.
Take the screwdriver and remove the nut and the hand wheel from the top of the gate valve.
Unscrew the packing nut from the stem and remove the gland spring along with the packing gland from the top portion of the bonnet.
Remove all the nuts, lock washers and cap screws that are visible on the valve body and bonnet.
Take the bonnet, the gasket and the disc riser off of the stem. Unbolt the stem from the bonnet to complete the process.
